Foil windings in transformers

The foil winding of a transformer is a special type of winding structure used to transmit electrical energy and change voltage and current. Foil windings have unique features and advantages compared to traditional windings.

Foil windings consist of a series of parallel-arranged metal foils, usually made of a conductive material such as copper or aluminum, separated by insulating material. The width of the sheet can be adjusted as needed to meet specific current and voltage requirements.

Foil windings are made from metal foil with a larger cross-section and shorter current paths, resulting in lower resistance and higher conductivity. This helps reduce resistive losses and heat generation, thereby increasing the efficiency of the transformer.

The metal foil of the foil winding ensures better heat dissipation and faster transfer to the environment. This helps keep winding temperatures stable, improving the transformer's load capacity and long-term reliability.

Since the sheets are arranged in parallel during sheet winding, it is more efficient than traditional coil winding in terms of space utilization. Foil windings can be installed more compactly inside the transformer core, thus reducing the size and weight of the transformer.
Insulation between each leaf of the foil winding is necessary to prevent electrical shorts. Insulation lamination is typically performed using insulating paper, electrical tape, or other insulating materials to ensure safe insulation between sheets.

Foil windings are widely used in high power transformers and converters. With their high electrical conductivity, good heat dissipation properties and compact structure, foil windings are able to handle higher currents and powers while reducing transformer size and heat losses. This makes foil winding one of the most common winding structures in modern power systems.
