Enameled Aluminum Wire for Oil-immersed Transformers

Oil-immersed transformers often use enamelled aluminum wire as the winding material. Enamelled aluminum wire is a type of winding material consisting of an aluminum conductor covered in an insulating varnish layer. The aluminum conductor provides good electrical conductivity, while the enamel provides electrical insulation.

The thermal properties of enameled aluminum wire are generally lower than those of copper conductors, which means that enameled aluminum wire will have a higher temperature rise under the same load conditions. Therefore, when designing an oil-immersed transformer, good heat dissipation systems and temperature management need to be considered to ensure that the transformer operates within an acceptable temperature range.

Compared to copper conductors, aluminum conductors have a lower electrical conductivity. This means that enameled aluminum wire will have a higher resistance for the same current load, resulting in greater power consumption and voltage drop. Therefore, it may be necessary to increase the cross-sectional area of the enameled aluminum wire in the design to reduce the resistance and to ensure that the performance of the transformer is not affected.

Enameled aluminum wires have better corrosion resistance compared to copper conductors. This is an important characteristic for oil-immersed transformers, which are often operated in wet or high humidity environments.

The production process for enamelled aluminum wire is similar to that for enamelled copper wire, but due to the nature of aluminum, special handling and precautions are required. For example, during the enameling process, the surface of the aluminum conductor may require special treatment to ensure the adhesion and quality of the enamel layer.

In the design and manufacture of oil-immersed transformers, the selection and use of enamelled aluminum wires should be in accordance with applicable standards and codes, such as the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and relevant national or regional standards. These standards usually contain requirements, test methods and performance specifications for enameled aluminum wires.

The use of enameled aluminum wire in oil-immersed transformers needs to be evaluated based on specific design requirements, load requirements and environmental conditions. It is important to consult with a professional power engineer, equipment manufacturer, or expert in the field to ensure that the aluminum enameled wire selected and used meets the specific requirements and standards, as well as the performance and reliability needs of the transformer.
