Enameled copper wires for continuous rated motors for electric vehicles mainly use 180-240 grade enameled flat wires. The advantage of enameled flat wire over round wire is that there is no gap, and the higher volumetric efficiency increases the gap coefficient, allowing for miniaturization and high performance of the motor.

Ordinary copper wire is insulated by encasing it in thick rubber. Enameled copper wire is insulated by coating it with lacquer. It is mainly used for round, flat and square magnet wires.

Copper wires are made from 8 mm (5/16 inch in the U.S.A.) copper rods, which are drawn into the desired bare wire size by means of a wire drawing die.
