What is the Leeds Line?

What is Litz Thread?
The word "Litz" comes from the German word "litzendraht" which means braided wire. Litz wire consists of individually insulated enameled wires that are bundled or braided in a uniform manner so that each strand of enameled wire occupies every possible position in the cross-section of the conductor.

Leeds wire is a cable consisting of several strands of finely insulated enameled wire assembled side by side. It is used to carry high frequency currents because each strand of insulated wire carries a portion of the current and avoids the losses caused by the skin effect. Leeds wire is commonly used in radio frequency (RF) applications and high-frequency power circuits such as induction heaters and Tesla coils.

Strands of twisted wire are usually twisted into a bundle or into several bundles to form a large cable. Twisted conductors help control the magnetic field around the wire and maintain a steady current.

What are the advantages of Leeds wire?
Reduces the occurrence of "hot spots"
Reduces alternating current losses
Minimizes eddy current losses

How do I solder Leeds wire?
Soldering Leeds wire can be very difficult as it can contain thousands of individually insulated strands. Before soldering, these insulations must be removed. To do this, first burn the end to be soldered and then clean up the burnt insulation with steel wool. It is very difficult to do this without destroying the filament or leaving some of it behind.

The best way to do this is to use a hot solder bath, which will burn off the insulation and add solder. The solder bath must be very hot, and it works better if the LITZ wire is soaked in flux first to help the solder adhere.
